The Tower

The tower is the oldest part of Bruce Castle.

The tower is over 500 years old!

At the time it was built, a man called William Compton owned Bruce Castle.

William had a very important but rather smelly job. He was the Groom of the Stool to King Henry VIII and had to help him go to the toilet!

Over the years, there have been lots of different ideas about how the tower was used including a banqueting house, a water tower and a place to store food.

False!

We think it was a hawks mews, which is a place for hunting birds to live, but no-one is really sure.

Hawks are a type of bird used in falconry. This was a popular Tudor sport for the rich. It also provided a source of meat for the house as the hawks would catch small mammals, like rabbits.

In the Victorian period it was used to store dairy foods as the thick wall keep it cool in hot weather.

Today the tower is used for storytelling, art exhibitions and very small weddings!
